XxxHolic Manga Gets Japanese Live-Action Movie April 2022

The xxxholic manga, of acollective artist Clamp, will be transformed into a film adaptation in live action, with Ryunosuke Kamiki. Kamiki previously appeared as Seta in the Rurouni Kenshin movie franchise, and this time it will be joined by Ko Shibasaki of Royal battle and 47 Ronin Fame.

Here is a first look at the two actors in costume.

The outfits definitely seem to be on point.

The live action version will be directed by Mika Ninagawa, who is known for his visually striking feature films like the one from 2012. Helter Skelter and 2019 Dinner. More recently, she directed Followers for Netflix. Ninagawa first made her mark as a photographer, and she should be able to capture Clamp’s stylistic flair for the big screen.

The xxxholic manga debuted in 2003, and below is a synopsis for Del Rey english edition:

Watanuki Kimihiro is haunted by visions of ghosts and spirits. Apparently by chance, he meets a mysterious witch named Yuuko, who claims to be able to help him. In desperation, he accepts, but realizes that he has just been brought in to work for Yuuko in order to pay the cost of his services. Soon he is employed in his small shop, a job unlike his previous work experience!

Most of Yuuko’s clients live in Japan, but Yuuko and Watanuki are about to have some unusual visitors named Sakura and Syaoran from a country called Clow …

Production IG adapted the manga into an animated television series in the mid-2000s.

The upcoming feature film, however, is not the first live-action adaptation. In 2013 there was a live action series that aired on Japanese television, featuring Anne Watanabe and Shota Sometani. Earlier this fall, an adaptation of a play called xxxHolic Theater Style, started its run in Tokyo.

The xxxholic The live-action film will be released across Japan on April 29, 2022. No word yet on an international release.
